After a short rehearsal period, last night we opened and I had the privilege to perform as Calpurnia in Julius Caesar as part of the Victoria and Albert Museums Performance Festival 2016. Over the years I've performed in array of different venues: theatres, schools, a Norwegian abbey, sticky floored Jazz bars, the back garden of the King of Sweden you name it, but this was a new experience. It was a nice challenge both acoustically and aesthetically as the performance space did have a slight echo and there was the slight feeling of being upstaged by the decor. However, the tapestries hanging in front and behind us made me feel very privileged as an actor - it's not often you can perform surrounded by artefacts which give such an authentic sense of grandeur to the environment. After the first 5 minutes there was little imagination needed: I WAS in the grand hall of a divine Roman Palace.
